Ph.D. Project

Why States Act Through Informal International Governmental Organizations? (Working Title)

In this project I am aiming to shed light on the question of why states choose to act through informal international organizations in current international affairs. Starting with a critique of the rational-functionalist perspective, which is often used to explain the use and rise of informal organizations, the project intends to broaden the theoretical view on the causes of the emergence of these organizations by deploying and linking different theoretical viewpoints like Realism, Neoliberal Institutionalism, Constructivism and Historical Institutionalism to reach a comprehensive answer to the main research question. Despite the increasing number and diversity of informal organizations, they have so far largely been neglected in the scientific debate. The project therefore also provides an encompassing conceptualization of informality and informal organizations as well as an empirical overview that is based on a self-provided dataset.
