Thematic areas of interest

In this section you will find some basic information about the research we do at the Chair of International Relations, FSU Jena. First, we proudly present the major research topics of our team. Second, we shed light on our running and finalized PhD and Habilitation projects mentored by Rafael Biermann. For people considering to join our team, these pages offer valuable direction. Third, these projects are discussed twice annually in our lively PhD workshops, which are introduced thereafter. Fourth, we are editing with Springer a book series called Innovation in Conflict Research, which invites authors of high-quality manuscripts to publish with us please visit the pages.   • Research Profile

    The primary focus of our research is on peace and conflict and on international organizations. We are working in four thematic areas of interest:

    (1) international conflict, especially secession and ethics of peace

    (2) patron-client relations in world politics

    (3) relations among international governmental organizations and

    (4) post-conflict memory and transitional justice

    Our regional focus is on Europe (post-Soviet space, South-Eastern Europe) and on East Asia

  • Patronage

    The Chair of International Relations of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Prof. Rafael Biermann has been at the forefront of a novel research program on patron-client relations in contemporary world politics. In order to further the research of the concept our Chair has organized several high profile workshops with prestigious organizations such ECPR and EISA.

  • KonKoop Network

    Since April 2022, the Chair of International Relations of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena has been a member of the Cooperation and Conflict in Eastern Europe (KonKoop) research network. The network is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and it consists of six research institutes that will cooperate in the next four years (2022-2025) to connect and advance research carried out in Germany on conflict in Eastern Europe .

  • Early Career Workshop

    The Early Career Workshops (ECW) are an integral part of our long standing, structured and high-quality PhD programme.
